About Dice and Tabletop Gaming

The Role of Dice in Gaming

Dice have been an integral part of games throughout human history, with evidence of dice dating back thousands of years. They introduce an element of chance and unpredictability that makes games exciting and replayable.

In modern tabletop role-playing games (RPGs), dice are used to resolve actions, determine outcomes, and add an element of risk and reward to player decisions. Different systems use different combinations of dice to create various probability distributions.

Types of Polyhedral Dice

The standard set of polyhedral dice includes seven different shapes: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, and percentile dice (d100, usually represented by two d10s). Each has a different probability distribution and is used for different purposes in games.

Each die is named for the number of faces it has. The d20 is the most iconic die in Dungeons & Dragons, used for attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks. The d6 is the familiar cube-shaped die used in countless games throughout history.

Dice Roller Features

Using Dice in Different Games

Dungeons & Dragons

  • d20: Attack rolls, ability checks, saving throws
  • d4, d6, d8, d10, d12: Damage rolls (weapon-dependent)
  • d100 (2d10): Random tables, percentile checks
  • 4d6 drop lowest: Character ability score generation
  • Advantage/Disadvantage: Roll 2d20, take highest/lowest

Other RPG Systems

  • Savage Worlds: Trait dice (d4-d12), exploding dice, Wild Die
  • World of Darkness: Dice pools of d10s, success on 8+
  • GURPS: 3d6 roll-under system
  • Fate: Specialized Fate dice (d6 with +1, 0, -1)
  • Shadowrun: Dice pools of d6s, success on 5+

Understanding Probability in Dice

Uniform vs. Bell Curve Distribution

Single Die (Uniform Distribution):

When rolling a single die, all possible results are equally likely. For example, on a d20, you have a 5% chance of rolling any given number.

This creates a "flat" probability distribution, where extreme results are just as common as middle results.

Multiple Dice (Bell Curve):

When rolling multiple dice and adding them (like 3d6), results cluster around the average, with extreme results becoming less likely.

For 3d6, the most common result is 10-11, while 3 and 18 are the least likely outcomes, creating a "bell curve" distribution.
